Your campus email address is assigned to you at time of application/enrollment or employment, and is tied to your active status with the university. (See https://itanswers.mst.edu/2023/06/what-is-my-email-address/ and https://itanswers.mst.edu/2023/06/why-cant-i-have-my-email/ for more details.)
You should avoid signing up or using your campus email address or account with any outside service where the usage would extend beyond your time with the University. Examples of this include:
- Loan servicing or other financial institutions
- Subscriptions to web sites/services
- Application/software purchases for personal devices (Apple App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store, etc.)
- Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
There are occasions where using your university email for subscriptions/purchases can result in discounts. In those cases, it is strongly advised that you keep track of any of those uses and make sure to change them over to new email immediately upon or prior to graduation or departure from the university. Please note that some services (Google Play, YouTube, etc.) DO NOT allow you to transfer content or purchases or change email addresses, so keep in mind that you will lose the ability to access/manage those purchases when your account is shut off as part of email/account retention policies.
