Gmail decommissioning – November 1, 2023

The Gmail application and email messages within your Google account have been retained as part of a ‘grandfather’ clause from when Gmail service was shut off for all new users as part of the UM Information Security Policies and standardization effort to reduce support and security exposure for services that are no longer supported by UM System. The grandfathering timeline is drawing to a close, and Gmail service will be fully discontinued as of November 1, 2023.

Service of your Gmail application and messages will end and content within the mailbox will be removed on November 1 with no ability to recover content after that date. If you wish to retain content from within the mailbox, you must move it out by that date. To move your content from the mailbox, please utilize Google Takeout to help with exporting messages and files.

Additional information related to the decommission of Gmail will be available and updated here as the November 1 date approaches.

  • Will this affect my Google Drive / OneDrive / SharePoint / other services?
    • No, this only affects the legacy google mail service that has not been supported or active since 2019 when all student email was moved to Office 365.
