Windows 11 Transition

In 2023, S&T IT began focusing efforts and communicating to campus about the transition to Windows 11 operating system for campus computers to be compliant with UM System Information Security policies and guidelines. In fall 2025, Microsoft will no longer support the Windows 10 operating system. IT has a goal to transition computers running Windows 10 off our main network by the spring of 2025. Any campus managed computer running Windows 10 after spring 2025 may experience a service disruption.

Progress: As of Wednesday, August 21, IT has been able to update or replace computers to achieve 78% conversion to Windows 11:

Who: All users with campus managed computers running Windows.

What: At the beginning of the 2024, IT started coordinating efforts working with departments to identify old computers that need to be replaced. Information was also provided about an opportunity to participate in a Dell bulk buy to purchase new Windows 11 computers at a discounted price. During the summer of 2024, IT contacted users who had computers that could be upgraded to Windows 11 to schedule an appointment to have that upgrade done.

When: In the fall of 2024, another Dell bulk buy will be scheduled. Departments and users will be contacted and provided a link to order replacement computers, or to upgrade computers that meet the requirements.
